هانری دونان، بازرگان و بشردوست سوئیسی، پس از مشاهده فجایع جنگ سولفرینو در سال ۱۸۵۹، ایده تشکیل یک سازمان جهانی امدادی را مطرح کرد. او در کتابی با عنوان "خاطرات سولفرینو" به شرح مشاهدات خود از این جنگ و رنج و مشقت سربازان زخمی پرداخت. 
پیشنهاد دونان با استقبال افراد نیکوکار و ارتش‌های اروپایی روبرو شد و در سال ۱۸۶۳ نخستین کنفرانس بین‌المللی ژنو با حضور نمایندگان ۱۶ کشور دنیا برگزار شد. در این کنفرانس، اساسنامه صلیب سرخ به تصویب رسید و یک سال بعد، قرارداد ژنو برای تأسیس نهاد صلیب سرخ به امضای ۱۶ کشور رسید.
تا سال ۱۹۶۳، جمعیت‌های ملی صلیب سرخ در ۸۸ کشور فعال شده بودند و امروزه بیش از ۱۳۰ کشور نهاد صلیب سرخ یا هلال‌احمر دارند. این نهادها با بیش از ۲۵۰ میلیون عضو در سراسر جهان، به یاری انسان‌های نیازمند در زمان جنگ، صلح و بلایای طبیعی می‌شتابند. 
به پاس ایده درخشان هانری دونان، زادروز او (۸ مه) به عنوان روز جهانی صلیب سرخ و هلال‌احمر نامگذاری شده است.
فعالیت‌های صلیب سرخ و هلال‌احمر بسیار گسترده و متنوع است. این نهادها در زمینه‌های مختلفی مانند کمک‌های اولیه، امداد و نجات، بهداشت و درمان، آموزش، حمایت از آسیب‌پذیران و ترویج صلح و حقوق بشر فعالیت می‌کنند.
صلیب سرخ و هلال‌احمر به عنوان نمادی از بشردوستی و امید، در سراسر جهان شناخته شده هستند. این نهادها با تلاش‌های بی‌وقفه خود، جان انسان‌های بسیاری را نجات داده و به زندگی میلیون‌ها نفر در سراسر جهان امید و آرامش بخشیده‌اند.

After witnessing the disasters of the Solferino War in 1859, Henri Donan, a Swiss businessman and philanthropist, came up with the idea of   forming a world relief organization. In a book titled "Memoirs of Solferino", he described his observations of this war and the suffering of wounded soldiers.
Donan's proposal was welcomed by philanthropists and European armies, and in 1863, the first Geneva International Conference was held with representatives of 16 countries. In this conference, the statute of the Red Cross was approved and a year later, the Geneva Convention for the establishment of the Red Cross was signed by 16 countries.
By 1963, national Red Cross societies were active in 88 countries, and today more than 130 countries have Red Cross or Red Crescent organizations. These institutions with more than 250 million members around the world rush to help people in need in times of war, peace and natural disasters.
Thanks to the brilliant idea of   Henri Doonan, his birthday (May 8) is named as International Red Cross and Red Crescent Day.
The activities of Red Cross and Red Crescent are very wide and varied. These institutions operate in various fields such as first aid, relief and rescue, health and treatment, education, protection of the vulnerable and promotion of peace and human rights.
The Red Cross and Red Crescent are known worldwide as symbols of philanthropy and hope. With their continuous efforts, these organizations have saved many lives and brought hope and peace to the lives of millions of people around the world.
